Work Diary- Minimum Depth Of Field

Plans and Expectations

Minimum depth of field is the first technique which I will shoot for this project. I plan to experiment with this to enable me to develop on skills and ability's and  to help me develop onto more intriguing shoots later on. I plan to use a mixture of models and natural settings for this shoot.

Evaluations

This image is by far my favorite image from my minimum depth of field photos. It creates a line of

focus within the middle of the image however this line is slightly diagonal, providing a interesting focal point. I think this piece shows what would normally appear as a dull brown forest floor to be a more intriguing. I like the way in which minimum depth of field is used and the certain areas of which are blurred. This images has helped me to see how a simple setting and scene can still be used to create good. To created this image my camera was set to f/5.6, ISO 250 with a 38mm focal length and 1/50 second shutter speed. The setting helped to created the desired look and unique focal point. The 38mm focal length helped me created this desired focal point and blur around the centre of the image.

I find it interesting how the subject is enhanced by the slightly blurred background. Creating a more defined focal point. The facial expression and soft hair gives the impression of a natural pose which I fell works well in this image. The way her hair is positioned creates a slight impression of a summer breeze. The doors and path to inside in the background give the idea she has stepped outside and is embracing a fresh summer breeze. I created this image in a similar way to the previous image, however slightly different setting was required due to the difference of the images. My camera was set to f/5.6, ISO 100 with a focal length of 55mm and shutter speed 1/160 seconds. It was the shutter speed which allowed the delicate movement of her hair to be displayed and the 55mm focal length which help me to display a distort background and main focus on the girl.

Progression

Next I plan to work on sequencing and involving animation within this technique. I hope to later use minimum depth of field within shoots, however I feel this is not a technique which I will do a whole shoot on. I believe that this technique was successful and will be useful within my project and has developed my skills and knowledge due to the research and work I done on minimum depth of field.

  1. this is a good post with good explanation of how depth of field affects a portrait by isolating the subject from the background. You should have noted the aperture setting to help reinforce your understanding of depth of field, for example f2.8 to f5.6 generally gives a shallow depth of field where the subject is in focus and the background blurred.. To find out what the camera settings are you should look at the file in Photoshop and select, File, File info and camera data.
